Position Paper
1. Potential research contribution in light of, or linked to A. WG interest and Scientific programme:
Our research is linked to Working Group 3 – Experiential and emotional aspects of reading – asking how different reading devices affect the literary experience of reading narrative fiction and examining various dimensions of this reading practice. In an interdisciplinary cooperation between literary studies and empirical social sciences we are trying to find out what the transition from paper to screen means for the literary experience of the individual reader and furhter on for our society. To do so our project draws on a combination of focus group research and two experimental studies dealing with literary narratives of medium length. The dimensions of the reading experience we are especially interested in are mental representation, story comprehension, immersion, empathy and reflection.
B. Action objectives (pages 7-10 in the MoU):
We are interested in any kind of collaboration with E-READ, especially in discussing methods and results of research in the consequences of changing reading media. We fully agree with E-READS objectives as to «improve scientific understanding of the implications of digitization and help individuals, disciplines, societies and sectors across Europe to cope optimally with the effects«. Secondary objectives are for instance
• to provide evidence-based recommendations to educational practitioners and policy makers especially for schools and universities;
• to prompt systematic, empirical, interdisciplinary research transcending established boundaries between scientific disciplines involved in reading research;
• to establish long-term theoretically and methodologically innovative research collaboration;
2. Interest in
A. organizing and/or participating in a short-term scientific mission (STSM).
Optional: pursuing what research questions/projects; where to/with whom; linked to what objective(s) of the Action:
We are especially interested in the participation in scientific meetings, workshops and conferences as well as maybe applying for a Short Term Scientific Mission if possible. The main goals of our participation within E-READ though are first, to be updated on E-READ’s activities and the findings of the various Working Groups and second, all kinds of discussion and exchange of research results from us and E-READ.
